SAN FRANCISCO—A woman whose gastroenterologist requested a stool sample says she was livid when she found out a few days later they’d misplaced it and so she’d have to give them another one. “When they told me they lost my shit,” Brittany Schonfeld, 34, says, “I, well, lost my shit.” She says she’s not usually one to get her panties in a bunch but, as a single mother of three young kids at home, having to give another sample felt like being up shit creek without a paddle. “Squatting, then scooping—I started yelling at the guy in the office,” she says, “and I said some pretty shitty things to him.” Being in healthcare herself, she says she knows shit happens but that she’s still puzzled as to how shit goes missing. “I know my story might make me seem like a shithead to some, but I’m not an asshole. I just think as a doc you should have your shit together.”
