HONOLULU—A woman who recently purchased a Tesla Model 3 made a shocking discovery as she watched overnight footage from her outdoor security camera: Her car actually runs on plain old gas.
Andrea Kamaka says that in the home surveillance video captured just after 2 a.m., a man in an ExxonMobil fuel tanker drives up, gets out, and begins pumping gas into her EV. Although the footage isn’t high def, she says she immediately recognized the man as an employee from the Tesla dealership in Honolulu, where she bought the car last week. When she showed the video to her husband, who drives a 1984 El Camino and doesn’t believe in EVs, he told her he wasn’t surprised at all about the apparent ruse.
Kamaka and her husband hypothesize that as Tesla’s business model as an EV maker may be flawed, the company might now be building traditional gas-powered vehicles but passing them off as EVs at a premium price. They suspect the electric charging stations are merely a way for Tesla to know when and where to fill the cars surreptitiously with gas. They say her discovery also explains why Tesla owners must take their vehicles to the dealership for servicing: The company does not want people to figure out the battery pack is in reality just a very large gas tank.
